Today, I will be sharing with us on the procedures used in determining the genotype of a fetus.

Do you have the genotype AS? You got married to a man also having the AS genotype, and now you are pregnant.
Do you know that the genotype of the fetus in your womb can be determined?
Are you worried that the baby might be carrying the SS genotype?
Do you feel ashamed to share this with anyone?
Do you feel there is no hope whatsoever to this?
Biochemical makeup of the blood is actual genotype definition. There is a procedure used in determining it of a baby while it is still in the mother’s womb, in order to make a decision on whether to keep the baby till birth or not. This procedure is referred to as FETAL GENOTYPE.
The most common types of genotype are the following:
AS, AA, AC, SS, SC and SC
A man with the genotype AS planning to have children with a woman of the genotype AS; this is not a safe relationship. Because there is always the probability of giving birth to an SS child and/or children.
When a man with genotype AS marries a woman with the same AS, whenever pregnancy occurs, there is always a kind of anxiety as to whether the baby is carrying the SS genotype or not, and they might want to determine it while still in the womb.
The relationship could be a deliberate one, it could also be a mistake. For example, a woman who had thought all through her life that she is of the genotype AA got married to a man of the AS; that was a safe relationship.
During pregnancy, she registered for antenatal clinic and in the course of medical investigation/tests, she was shocked when her result read AS.
How possible is that? You asked.
She asked for the test to be repeated by another laboratory technician, the result came out as AS. Fuming with anger, she threatened to sue them if the result says otherwise in another laboratory.
When the result was handed over to her, she hurriedly tore the envelope, and what she saw was the same AS.
You asked, what could have happened?
The first time she did testing, she was in college. There could be laboratory error due to large samples the laboratory technician needs to carry out. So her result could have been mistakenly switched for another.
What a gross mistake!
But then, there is something that could be done. It can be determined.
Fetal genotype counseling/or procedure begins at exactly 9-10 weeks of pregnancy for early intervention.
Procedures used for determining:
- Amniocentesis: In simpler terms, this procedure is a test carried out on the amniotic fluid of the mother. Amniotic fluid is a clear to pale yellow liquid that is found in the amniotic sac (baby’s house). This fluid is 98 percent of water and 2 percent of salt. This fluid begins to form around one-two weeks after conception, increasing in volume until 36 weeks of pregnancy. This is usually carried out at about 9-13 weeks of pregnancy. A little volume of this fluid is taken to the lab to determine it.
- Cordocentesis: In this procedure, little tissue is taken from the cord of the baby. This is usually carried out at about 9th -13th weeks of pregnancy to determine this.
- Chorionic villus sampling: In this procedure, little tissue from the placenta is obtained and taken to the laboratory for analysis. This is usually carried out at about the 10th weeks of pregnancy to determine it.
All of the above listed procedures used in determining it has little or no risks.
most of the people do not know the distinction between genotype vs phenotype (phenotype vs genotype). In simple words genotype is hereditary information of an organism (genotype definition biology), whereas; phenotype is observed properties of an organism.
